While the phrase “Location, Location, Location” may be the mantra of the real estate world, “Content, Content, Content”, may very well be the mantra of the web site industry.

Why?

According to many web marketers, content determines the value of your website. Simply having a good looking website, devoid of good content, will fail to do what you ultimately want your web site to do: produce repeat visitors.

What is good content?

Good content should include relevant information about your industry or business, resources and other useful content. Also, try to keep your site fresh by putting up new content on a regular basis. This doesn’t mean changing a paragraph or two on ‘About Us’ or your ‘Services’ page; it means adding information-rich articles, recommending reading lists, reports, blogs, and sometimes links to other web sites.

Also worth consideration are the key words visitors would use to find your pages. Make sure that your site actually includes those words within it. (MJ: how does one determine this? Isn’t there a list one can use?)

Web marketers also talk about making sites “stickier.” Stickiness refers to the length of time a visitor spends on your web site. This may be defined as how long a visitor stays on your website per visit, or how many times visitors return to your site. The longer someone stays on the site, or the more times they return to your site suggest that something about your website – your content – is getting their attention. The more time a visitor spends on your site, the more likely they are to do business with you.

The bottom line is that you need to have a well-considered content development strategy. If done right, it will make a big difference as to how useful your website will be to your business. Not comfortable with writing or perhaps business is keeping you too busy? Well-connected web designers often have writers to help get your content prepared and on the site, so you can dedicate your time where it is best spent: with your customers.
